Does your child suffer from headaches or migraines?

According to the Danish Migraine and Headache Association, every 1 in 20 children in danish schools struggle with migraines and even more suffer from recurrent tension headaches. One of the most commonly used treatments for headaches used by adults is chiropractic treatment and headaches are the second most common reason why children seek a chiropractor in Denmark.

TREATMENT OF HEADACHE IN CHILDREN
- ABOUT THE RESEARCH

Headache is one of the most common ailments in children and it can have a huge impact on a child’s life. It is estimated that 75% of children at the age of 15 have experienced significant headaches, which for 10% are recurrent.

The project led by danish chiropractor Susanne Lynge and backed by the University of Southern Denmark included 200 children aged 7-14 years who experienced recurrent headaches or migraines at least once a week for more than half a year. Of the 200 children, 100 children received targeted chiropractic manipulation treatment, and 100 children received placebo treatment. The study concluded that chiropractic spinal manipulation resulted in fewer headaches and higher global perceived effect, with only minor side effects.

ETHICS IN CLINICAL TRIALS IN CHILDREN

To assure the best care for the children enrolled, a through rough  post-intervention treatment was implemented in the setup and method. Children in the chiropractic spinal manipulation treatment group who reported little or no effect, or a worsening of their headache after treatment were offered a consultation with the paediatrician. Children in the sham manipulation group who reported little or no effect, or a worsening of headache after the trial period were offered free chiropractic care, similar to the care delivered in the spinal manipulation group.

We are proud to have assured a complete and ethical treatment of all children involved. All participants were treated according to the Declaration of Helsinki.
